Pickleball Paddle Materials: Pros and Cons

If we talk about the Paddle face or surface then as per the USA pickleball any object (hole or any other thing) on the pickleball paddles surface which can allow for spin. Pickleball Paddle heads must be made of a solid or hard surface.

Pickleball paddle roughness and friction are tested in two ways. Firstly, using a Starrett SR160 or SR300 Surface Roughness Tester. Secondly, a coefficient of friction test based on ASTM D1894-14 protocol is conducted, aiming for a maximum kinetic coefficient of friction value of ≤ 0.1875. As stated by the Equipment Evaluation Committee (EEC) the paddle’s roughness should not exceed an average of 30 micrometers (µm) on the Rz readings and 40 micrometers on the Rt readings, measured in six different directions.

Rubber, synthetic materials, and foam are commonly used handle materials for pickleball paddle and are typically approved by USA Pickleball. These materials offer a comfortable grip and aid players in maintaining control during gameplay. The best core for a pickleball paddle depends on personal preference and playing style. Common core materials include polymer, Nomex, and aluminum. Polymer cores are known for their soft feel and quieter play, while Nomex cores offer more power and control. Aluminum cores provide durability and responsiveness. According to USA Pickleball, there are no specific rules regarding core thickness, but the paddle must adhere to overall size and weight regulations.

Approved Dimensions

The pickleball paddle’s total size “24 inches”, which is the length and width combined, can’t be bigger than the limits set by the International Pickleball Federation  (IFP) and USA Pickleball rule “2.E.3”.
