What are the pickleball game types?

Pickleball is played in different types and styles, like Single players or double players, Outdoor pickleball, and indoor pickleball.  Let’s have a look at each type of pickleball game:

Classic pickleball

In classic pickleball, you can play it with one person against another or with two people on each team. You can say this game can be played with this rule:

“1 VS 1” or “2 VS 2”

The game takes place on a special pickleball court. Here’s a quick summary of a classic pickleball game:

Each team turns hitting a wiffle ball (called a pickleball) back and forth diagonally across the court. It’s important not to step into a specific area called the kitchen, except when the ball is about to land there. Teams have at least two chances to score a point. The scoring system has three numbers, like 0-0-1 or 0-0-2. learn more about it in the blog of What is pickleball sport?

The third number, 1 or 2, shows which team is serving. The first two numbers are the regular score. The game is played to 11, 15, or 21 points, depending on what you and your friends decide. Just have fun playing.

Four player pickleball

It is the same as the rules of 4-square but with Pickleball paddles on a dedicated Pickleball court. If the ball goes out after the last touch in your square, rotate through the line. In the beginning, pick someone to be the king, and try to work your way through, taking turns to dethrone the king. It’s a fun and dynamic way to play, blending the excitement of 4-square with the unique elements of Pickleball.

4 + players, 1 court

Dinking competition

Pickleball with 4 players in one court or 2 players in one court is called a “Dinking competition”. You can consider it as a pickleball game style or pickleball type. So, let me write it simply for you in the blog of What is pickleball sport? Pickleball game type Dinking competition is a 4-player game or 2-player game on one court.

A dink is when you gently hit the ball back and forth with someone, usually near the kitchen. You try to keep the ball within the kitchen area and see how many times you and your friend can hit it without letting it touch the ground. The faster you hit the ball, the more fun it becomes!

Six players pickleball

Let’s call it Pickle Speed for fun! In this game, you play with 3 teams of 2 players each. Two teams will rally, hitting the ball back and forth. When one team loses a point, they have to quickly run off the court, and the third team runs on to receive the serve from the winning team. You can only score points when serving, like in regular pickleball.

But here’s the twist: the winning team doesn’t have to wait for the new team to get ready. They can serve quickly and catch the other team off guard! It’s a fast-paced game with teams switching in and out, making it a good workout. Especially if there’s only one court available for a big group, this game is a great choice.

Twelve players Pickleball

The game with 12 people is called Team Rodeo. It’s a fun game for big groups with only a few paddles. You only need 2 paddles, one for each side. Let’s say you have 12 people. Split them into two groups of 6, lined up against opposite fences. One player from each team will run up to the line, hit the ball, and then run back to pass the paddle to the next person in line. They’ll keep doing this down the line. It’s like a relay race! Good communication is key for quick pass-offs. The first team to reach 11, 15, or 21 points (you decide) wins! learn in detail about What is pickleball sport?

Single play in pickleball

In singles Pickleball, one player plays against another. The whole court is their responsibility, so they need to move around a lot. This kind of game needs the player to be fit and quick.

In singles, players use smart moves to place the ball well. They try to make their opponent run around the court and use any weaknesses. Serving and returning serves are super important too, as players try to get an advantage right from the beginning. It’s a game that needs both fitness and clever tactics.

Double play in pickleball

To know What is pickleball sport? includes double-play pickleball.in doubles pickleball, you play with a teammate against another team of two. Teamwork is super important – you and your partner need to talk and coordinate to cover the court well and stop the other team.

There’s a special area called the “kitchen” that you need to be mindful of. Teams often have gentle rallies, called “dinking,” where they softly hit the ball back and forth inside the kitchen, trying to make the other team make mistakes. Unlike singles, the serve in doubles is not too forceful. Players aim to place the ball well to set up a good second shot for their team.

Whether you like playing alone or with a friend, pickleball is a fun way to stay active. It depends on what you enjoy more. If you like a game that challenges your stamina and personal strategy, go for singles. If you prefer a game that’s about working together and smart playing, then doubles might be your thing. At Highlands Sports Complex, everyone is welcome, no matter which style you like. Come and play with us today.

You can also play pickleball with three players, the rules are the same you just need to make a team properly.

Outdoor vs indoor pickleball

Playing indoor pickleball differs slightly from playing outdoors, especially on basketball courts or wooden surfaces. The absence of wind or weather conditions makes the game more consistent and beginner-friendly. Indoors, players don’t have to worry about weather elements, providing a more focused environment. No sun glaring into your eyes is a plus, as well. Indoor facilities are well-lit, ensuring constant visibility without the changing natural light.

Regulated temperatures indoors are a major advantage, and many indoor facilities are popular hangouts with attached restaurants. It’s a great way for players to socialize without the weather affecting the fun.

However, the surface matters. Playing on a basketball court or a “sports court” affects the ball’s bounce differently than on an outdoor tennis court. This means using the right kind of pickleball for indoor play is essential. Indoor balls are lighter and have larger holes, optimized for smooth court performance, unlike heavier and more durable outdoor balls.

Acoustics can be a consideration; indoor pickleball can be noisy, and the indoor setting may impact the sound of the ball hitting the paddle. While indoor surfaces like sports courts are easier on the joints, they may have “dead” spots where the ball doesn’t bounce truly, leading to unpredictable and frustrating moments. So, playing indoors has its perks, but understanding the differences and adapting to the indoor environment is key to enjoying the game.

Competitive types of pickleball

Above you read about the types of pickleball based on players. Here are the pickleball types concerning the competition.

  • Ladders: This is a competitive format where players move up or down the ladder rankings based on their game results each week.
  • Challenge Court: During Open Play sessions, one court may be designated as a ‘Challenge’ court. Here, players can challenge each other for a more competitive game.
  • Structured Level Play (King’s Court): Players are assigned to courts based on their skill ratings. Games are timed, and winners move to higher skill level courts while losers move to lower skill level courts for subsequent rounds.
  • Round Robin Play: Players participate in structured play organized by skill levels. Each player plays six games with different partners and opponents.
  • Open Play – Gold/Silver sides: This method is used when there are more players than available courts. Winners sit on the Gold side, and losers on the Silverside, alternating between sides as games conclude.

How to play pickleball?

How to play pickleball and What is pickleball sport? is a most common question that arises in every beginner’s mind. We are here to guide you about how to play pickleball.  Here I’m providing you some simple rules for playing pickleball.  A Pickleball court is like a badminton court but smaller. There are two types of shots you can use ground stroke and volleys. To play the game you need to follow these steps:

  • Step 1 – Serve starts the rally: Each rally starts with the serve. The player who is standing on the right side starts the serve. He can serve diagonally in the right and left serving areas.
  • Step 2 – Underhand serve: In pickleball, the serve requires an underhand stroke or backhand with contact below the waist. Your arm should follow an upward arc during the striking motion. The serve can be performed by hitting the ball out of the air or by dropping it on the ground and making contact. Unlike a tennis serve, which aims for a forceful overhand method to secure points, the primary objective of a pickleball serve is to begin play by bringing the ball into the game.
  • Step 3 – Points continue: In pickleball, the game goes on until someone makes a mistake, known as a “fault,” which ends the rally. There are three common types of faults firstly, the server doesn’t clear the kitchen area (including the line). Secondly, a shot goes out of bounds, either behind the baseline or outside the sideline. Thirdly, a shot hits the net.
  • Step 4 – Volley in the kitchen is forbidden: The 7 ft zone on each side is the non-volley zone, also known as the ‘kitchen.’ In pickleball, you can’t hit a volley (a shot in the air) if any part of your body is in the kitchen or even on the kitchen line. Your momentum also can’t carry you into the kitchen after a volley.
  • Step 5 – The kitchen doesn’t allow groundstrokes: If your competitor hits a short shot landing in the kitchen, you’re allowed to enter the kitchen and hit from there. Dinks, which are soft shots close to the net, are a key part of the pickleball strategy. When you move into the kitchen to handle a dink, a common and effective play is to dink the ball right back to your opponent’s kitchen, creating a strategic exchange close to the net.
  • Step 6 – Before a team volley, the ball must be hit by both sides: It is a double bounce rule in which the ball must bounce on each side before any player can hit a shot out of the air.
  • Step 7 – Your serve makes the points: In pickleball, points can only be won on your serve, and you keep serving until you lose a rally. After scoring a point on your serve, you switch sides with your partner and serve to the other opponent. This rotation ensures fairness and allows both teams to have an opportunity to serve and score points.
  • Step 8 – Turn is served by both partners: In pickleball doubles, both players on a team take turns serving. The three numbers you hear during scoring, like “Zero, zero… two,” show which player has the serve. For example, if the score is 3-3 and you start serving, you’ll say “3-3-1” to let everyone know you’re the first server. If you lose, your teammate serves next, saying “3-3-2.” If they lose, it’s a ‘side out,’ and the opponents serve, announcing “3-3-1.” At the beginning of the game, the first server says “0-0-2” to ensure a fair start. It might sound confusing, but it becomes clear once you start playing.

How to properly serve in pickleball?

To serve in pickleball, stand at the back and hit the ball over the net to the other side. Aim for the box diagonally across from you. Keep the ball low but not too low.

What is the Duration of playing pickleball?

Pickleball game duration varies according to the game and the match. A game is almost 15 to 25 minutes long while a match is 30 to 75 minutes long.

How does the scoring system work in a pickleball game?

The serving team starts the game by hitting the ball underhand and diagonally. Only the serving team can win the game. Players can switch sides only after scoring points. And a game needs at least 12 points to win. but if a match reaches 10-10 ties players continue to play the game until a team makes two consecutive points to get victory.

Pickleball ground key considerations

The following are the key considerations while building the pickleball ground:

  • Maintain a proper dimension of the court that is 20 feet wide and 44 feet long
  • Court surface area must be according to the game it should provide good traction. The court surface is mostly made of concrete or specialized pickleball surfaces.
  • The net measurements should be 36 inches wide and 34 inches long.
  • The non-volley zone mostly known as the kitchen is 7 feet on each side of the net.
  • There are baselines and center lines to be marked in the court.
  • In addition, install pickleball lighting, seat windbreakers (if needed), and make sure the pickleball has enough surface area.

Pickleball Shots

You must be wondering what type of shots you can hit in the Pickleball game then the basic pickleball shots are given under:

  • The serve: The serve is the shot that kicks off the point in pickleball. Unlike volleys or groundstrokes, it’s its own thing. There are various ways to serve, offering players different techniques to start the game.
  • The Lob: The pickleball lob is a strategic shot where you hit the ball high over your opponents’ heads, making them retreat to the backcourt. This change in pace can create mistakes from your opponents and helps reset the tempo of the game. By using lobs wisely, you can force your opponent away from the net, allowing you to take control of the point. However, it’s crucial to be careful with the placement, as lobs that are too short can be easily countered, while those too long risk going out of bounds.
  • Cross-court dink: A cross-court dink in pickleball is a dink stroke that is executed from one side of the court to the opposite side of the opponent’s court. This shot is highly effective but challenging to master, making it both potent and frustrating. Understanding the distances is vital, as a cross-court dink covers a significantly longer distance than a straight dink. Consequently, more power is required to perform a successful cross-court dink, underscoring the importance of skill and precision in performing and countering this strategic shot.
  • The drive: A drive-in pickleball is a forceful groundstroke or volley aimed to be hit as hard as possible. It’s designed to be fast, powerful, and difficult to stop. This shot is best suited for players with strong upper body strength, making it challenging for those with less strength. Drives should be considered a tactical tool rather than a shot used regularly. They are most effective when there’s an opening in the court or when your opponent is moving toward you, presenting an opportunity to capitalize on the power and speed of the drive.
  • Block shot: In pickleball, the block shot is employed to counter third-shot drives or regular drives that could give your opponent an advantage. When facing a hard-hitting shot, the block shot serves as a technique to prevent the opponent from gaining the upper hand. It’s a valuable defensive move designed to control the pace of the game and handle powerful shots with more ease and accuracy.
  • Deep return serve: Mastering the block shot in pickleball is a crucial skill, and while not inherently difficult, it requires time and practice to become effective. Judging the distance when hitting the ball into the backcourt can be challenging due to skewed depth perception. A helpful way to train is to practice with a friend or pickleball buddy who can provide feedback on your shot placement. With consistent practice, your brain will develop a pattern, and over time, you’ll become more accustomed to judging and executing the block shot effectively.
  • Backhand punch: The backhand punch is a clever shot in pickleball that often surprises opponents. Executed near the net, this shot involves a punching motion with the paddle, turning a high dink from your opponent into a shot directed straight at them. To perform it, position your paddle for a backhand shot and mimic a punching motion with your fist. It’s a straightforward and effective move that can catch opponents off guard.
  • Overhand smash: The overhead smash in pickleball is a specialized shot meant to dominate the ball, making it extremely challenging for opponents to return. It’s an opportunity shot, especially effective when your opponents pop up a shot just above your head. Seize the moment to reach up and forcefully smash the ball downward. Accuracy is paramount; if you’re hitting into the net, minimize wrist action. However, if aiming for the opponent’s baseline, incorporate more wrist action or opt for a lighter paddle to enhance control. The overhead smash is a powerful move tailored for capitalizing on scoring opportunities.
  • Third shot drop: The third shot drop is supposed to be the most vital shot to master in pickleball, especially in advanced play. Many points are lost during the third shot, mainly because players feel pressure when implementing it. At this point, opponents have a significant benefit at the kitchen line, while you and your partner are still positioned at or near the baseline. Mastering the third shot drop becomes important for guiding this challenging situation and regaining control of the point.
  • The dink fake: The dink fake is a tricky shot in pickleball where you pretend to hit a soft shot but surprise everyone by driving the ball instead. It’s a quick and unexpected move designed to catch your opponents off guard. If done well, it can be highly effective, especially when aimed directly at your opponent, creating a sneaky and sly play that adds an element of surprise to the game.
  • Backspin return serve: The side spin shot in pickleball is both effective and entertaining when executed with accuracy. When faced with a semi-high serve that appears soft, slice downward with your paddle. The ball will softly float up but land with a marked sidespin, causing it to bounce sharply to the side. This makes it extremely difficult for your opponent to return. When done perfectly, the shot lands on either side of the kitchen, bouncing about a foot off the ground and to the side, creating a challenging technique for your opponent.

What are the Pickleball Techniques?

pickleball
pickleball

Here are some fundamental pickleball techniques that every player must have to learn to play pickleball.

  • Dinking: A drinking shot is played near the net and usually dinking is a soft and controlled shot, executed near the kitchen. It is used to play strategically to make the opponent feel the difficult return of the ball.
  • Volley: In volley, the ball is hit before it bounces to the ground and the ball is executed near the net to achieve the points
  • Ground Stroke: In groundstroke technique, the ball is hit after it bounces the ground at least once. It also includes forehand and backhand strokes.
  • Third shot drop: The third shot drop is a strategy to set up the dinking play. This is a soft and low shot directed over the net to a non-volley area and makes it difficult for the opponent to volley the ball because the shot is low.
  • Serve and return: Serving is important to get the advantage of taking the first point. Return is also crucial and of equal importance as serve.
  • Lobbing: Lobbying is an overhead and high shot that is used to make the opponent move away from the net to create an opportunity to have an overhead smash.
  • Overhead smash: An overhead smash is a strong shot that is directed downward to the opponent’s court. This shot is often used to capitalize on high lobs.
